Gold Is a Quarter Off Its Record in the Middle of a War
Oil spent the month near $100 on the Iran war, and gold still fell to its lowest price since early August. Goldman says the Fed will only slow the rally, and one market analyst says the fall has further to run.
China’s central bank added 20.2 tonnes of gold in August, its biggest month since October 2023.
The story
Gold opened Tuesday at $4,150 an ounce, its lowest since August 5. That is about 11 percent down in a month. And roughly a quarter below the record of $5,589 it set on January 28.
That is the strange part. Brent crude spent the month near $100 on the Iran war, and war is supposed to be gold’s weather.
The reason sits at the Fed. Expensive oil keeps inflation hot, and futures now put the odds of another rate hike in October near 70 percent.
Lina Thomas of Goldman Sachs wrote on September 23 that the hikes will “slow rather than derail the rally.” Joshua Gibson of FXStreet answered on Tuesday. Gold, he wrote, “is more likely to keep falling than to recover for as long as the 2-year yield keeps rising.”
If you bought coins or a gold IRA this winter, this one is already on your statement. A year-old position is still up about 9.5 percent.

Best case
MARCH 2027.  Rates went up once more in October, and then the Fed went quiet on hikes. Short-term Treasury yields rolled over well before Christmas, and gold turned with it.
The buying underneath never stopped. Central banks were taking about 90 tonnes a month by Goldman’s count. China had already imported a record 1,000 tonnes in the first seven months of 2026.
September turned out to be the sale. The $5,400 Goldman wrote down for the end of 2027 stopped sounding like a sales pitch. Your friend at the club, the one who dumped his coins at the October low, has changed the subject.
The gold in your IRA went back to being the boring line on the statement. Boring, and higher than it was in the fall.
Worst case
MARCH 2027.  Oil stayed near $100 and the Fed kept going. Two more hikes, and short-term rates sat above 5 percent all winter long.
A Treasury bill paid five percent for doing nothing. Gold paid nothing at all, and the money that crowded into it in January walked out one fund at a time. Every bounce got sold before the next Fed meeting.
The summer low near $3,950 that FXStreet flagged in September gave way in February. The dealer who sold you the coins now quotes a buyback price you do not like.
Your IRA statement shows the gold line down three quarters running. The money-market fund beside it pays you every month. Your coins are still gold. You bought them for a war, and the war is still going.
Every turn in today’s story runs through the Fed’s next decision, on October 28.

How it ends
You get the rally back by spring, unless the two-year yield goes through 5 percent and stays there.
We ran it both ways, and the war is the wrong thing to watch. Gold has been falling on the price of money.
Gold pays no interest. When a short Treasury pays close to 5 percent, holding metal costs you what the bond would have paid. That cost rose all month.
The two-year paid 4.63 percent on September 11. It paid 4.92 on Monday.
The floor is the buyers who ignore that math. Central banks hold gold as reserves, and China’s buyers head into their October holiday week with prices well off the top.
The Fed meets on October 27 and 28, and the market has already priced most of one more hike. An expected hike does far less damage than a surprise.
So the real risk is a Fed that keeps going after October. A two-year yield above 5 percent would be the market saying so. Friday’s jobs report and the October 14 inflation report both feed that number.
Gold is losing a bidding war with Treasury bills, and that contest keeps a public scoreboard.

The hinge
The two-year Treasury yield, printed on any market page every day. It closed Monday at 4.92 percent, up from 4.63 on September 11. A close above 5 percent that holds says the Fed has more hikes coming, and the floor under gold moves lower.
