Gold Slipped Under $4,000 When Investors Needed Cash
Gold fell with tech stocks last week as investors raised cash. Forecasters are now split on whether $4,000 is a bargain or a warning.
AI stocks led last week’s selling. Before the story, a message from American PowerGen, which develops power projects for AI data centers:

The story
Gold ended Friday below $4,000 an ounce for the first time since mid-July. Early Tuesday it was back just above that line, near $4,004.
Gold usually climbs in wartime. Yet it set its record in late January, a month before the U.S. went to war with Iran.
Anyone who bought near that peak is down by more than a quarter.
Some investors still see the dip as a chance. In the message below, Anchor Point Research (APR Insights) explains how savers 59½ and older can move part of a 401(k) or IRA into gold:

President Trump signing Executive Order #14330
President Trump signed Executive Order #14330, a sweeping change that could forever alter Americans’ retirement accounts.
For the first time ever, physical precious metals like gold are being formally opened to retirement portfolios.
The order is set to take effect in 2027, and J.P. Morgan projects a massive wave of demand could send gold prices toward $8,500 per ounce.
But here’s what most people don’t realize:
If you’re 59½ or older, you can move part of your 401(k) or IRA into gold, today, tax-deferred and penalty-free.
That means you can beat the rush to gold, while preserving the full tax advantages of your account.
With Executive Order #14330 now signed, the timing has never been clearer:
Gold prices rose 64% in 2025
J.P. Morgan forecasts gold hitting $8,500/oz
Ray Dalio recommends a 10-15% gold allocation for all investment portfolios

Gold’s sharpest drop came last Thursday. Tech stocks fell hard on worries about AI spending, and the Nasdaq lost 2.6%.
Gold fell nearly 3% the same day, even though rates on U.S. government bonds fell, which usually helps it. An analyst quoted by Reuters blamed margin calls: investors who had borrowed to buy tech stocks sold gold to raise cash.
The war works against gold more slowly. Costly oil keeps living costs rising, and that has the Fed leaning toward higher interest rates. Gold pays no interest, while the best one-year CDs pay about 4.6% right now.
The Fed announces its decision Wednesday afternoon. Traders see little chance of a hike this week, but they put the odds of one in December at about 82%.
UBS’s Giovanni Staunovo said this month that dips toward $4,000 are a chance to buy more.
Ilya Spivak of Tastylive warns of a sharper drop just under it. He told Reuters a break through $3,900 means “a pretty significant further decline, maybe to test the $3,800 area.”

Margin call
A broker’s demand for more cash when stocks bought with borrowed money fall. The investor has to pay fast, so he sells what sells fastest. Last week, that was gold.
Gold is one worry this fall. Washington is another, with the midterms a week from today. In the message below, American Alternative Assets asks what the vote could change for your retirement savings:

If the forced selling ends
Our best-case projection: March 2027
If $3,900 gives way
Our worst-case projection: December 2026
Best case
MARCH 2027.  The selling stopped once the margin calls did. Tech stocks steadied in November, and nobody has had to sell gold to raise cash since.
Central banks kept buying all winter, as they had all through 2026.
The Fed raised rates in December, as traders expected, and signaled it was done. Gold is back to $4,600, the level UBS had marked for the end of 2026.
About 15% above the Oct. 23 close, and still well short of January’s record. If you bought gold this fall, you are ahead again.
With the Fed done, CD rates have started to slip. Holding gold costs a little less each month.
Worst case
DECEMBER 2026.  The $3,900 line gave way right after the Fed’s October decision, and gold slid through $3,800, the area Spivak had named.
Tech stocks kept falling into Thanksgiving. Each new drop brought more margin calls, and gold was the easiest thing to sell.
Hedge funds had cut their gold bets eight weeks running by October, federal data showed, and they kept cutting.
On Dec. 9 the Fed raised rates and said more hikes may come. Bank CDs now pay more than they did in October.
Another 5% gone from the Oct. 23 close, and the slide has not stopped. An ounce bought at January’s record has lost nearly a third.
How it ends
You get a slow, flat winter for your gold, unless the $3,900 floor breaks.
Last week’s drop had the marks of forced selling, a scramble for cash.
That kind of selling fades once the margin calls stop. The Fed weighs on gold for longer, and it is likely to raise rates in December.
Gold has been sold for cash before. In 2008 it fell about 30% between March and October, as investors raised money to cover losses elsewhere. By 2011 it had more than doubled from that low.
That comeback had help, because the Fed cut rates to nearly zero in December 2008 and cash stopped paying anything. This time the Fed is raising rates instead.
If $3,900 holds, gold likely drifts sideways while it waits on the Fed, into spring. A finish below it puts Spivak’s $3,800 next.
Owning gold is like paying for insurance. This winter, the cost is the interest you give up. On $50,000, that is about $190 a month at today’s best one-year CD rates.
